My journey began when I was diagnosed with prediabetes in 2016 at 51.
I was 40lbs overweight, taking multiple medications, depressed, anxious, tired, and felt like a beached whale.
For over 30 years, I made the tour of equipment and exercise. I was getting on & off treadmills (literally), following the latest fads including aerobics, stairmasters, Zumba, organized national workout classes, videos and CDs that focused on (yawn) sit ups and stretching.
No exercise program was exciting for me. I hated treadmills and stair masters. Every exercise 'du jour' was so boring for me.
The prediabetes was my wake up call. My doctor wanted to put me on medication. I couldn’t see myself on a 7th medication…for life! I researched alternatives for prediabetes and found that weight training helped ‘do something’ to reduce my A1c.
I knew nothing about weight training. I thought that was only for big bulky men who compete in weight lifting and take steroids.
Little did I know the passion and enjoyment I would get out of working out with weights would completely change my lifestyle on multiple levels.
I found a trainer, and began working out. It was slow at first, but I found working with weights offered a variety of workout options, and an opportunity to challenge myself to do more and do it better.
After 90 days of weight work, I was retested and my A1c dropped BELOW the pre-diabetic level!
I progressed to eliminating ALL BUT ONE medication (med for dry eyes.) I worked on my mental fitness. Through Life Coaching, I worked to realign my thoughts and priorities, creating a lifestyle that is now balanced and intentional. Life Coaching was so impactful, I became Certified Coach.
Today I consider myself a warrior; and physically and mentally sound-at 59.
